Let’s see. Banked track? Check. Racers hurling themselves around same at break-neck speed? Check. Spectacular crashes and photo finishes? Check. NASCAR? Nope. Try professional bicycle racing and the Velo as the former Lehigh Valley Velodrome is widely known offers some of the best track bike racing on the East Coast. The 2008 schedule hasn’t been released but in past years racing of one form or another takes place on most nights while Fridays are reserved for the big pro races with internationally known riders. Fans can buy tickets for the bleachers or opt for general admission standing along the track’s rim getting an up-close view of the action. The final turn Turn Four offers the most exciting view as the racers typically are at full speed as they fly toward the finish line in front of the grandstand. The food and drink are reasonable and good — nachos and wraps and tasty burgers are features on the menu. Wine ($4.50) and draft beer ($3.25) are also available.
